Biomass
The burning of biomass, organic materials such as firewood and agricultural waste products, was not used for power until 1982. The industry was started, in part, by the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA) in 1978. In the 70's, it was predicted that the price of oil would rise to more than $100 a barrel by the mid-eighties.
