English physician William Gilbert discovered static electricity by rubbing amber together. He coined the term electricus ("of amber" or "like amber", from ηλεκτρον [elektron], the Greek word for "amber") to refer to the property of attracting small objects after being rubbed. The words "electric" and "electricity" were derived from his term.
